Naughty Bones
I have always been interested in the way we photograph children, and how we generally only take photos of our children as we want to remember them, shying away from realities or flaws and disabilities. We see endless images of happy children at birthday parties and in classic holiday snapshots, so it seems shocking to imagine a mother photographing her child having a tantrum or during a medical process.
As the mother of a little boy with Cerebral Palsy, I have a particular insight into the latter. This year, my son Leo underwent the first procedure for the effect of cerebral palsy on his gait. As I needed to concentrate more time on my son, I decided to turn the camera onto him and the process he was going through, as my final project on the degree course.
Most of these images were made using a medium format film camera over a five week period. The narrative of the photographs lent themselves perfectly to the medium of a book. Leo’s name for his disability, and therefore the title of the book is Naughty Bones,
